Powering What We Do: Energy at Bremar

Energy is the ability to do work. Civilisations have arisen from harnessing energy converted into different forms. Energy is universal in value — it is necessary to get anything done, from photosynthesis to a nuclear explosion.

At Bremar Limited, we understand the role of energy in daily life, and our focus is on providing solutions to harness energy more efficiently for different requirements and capacities. Our main focus is on the energy requirements for food preparation (cookstoves and ovens), heating at various capacities and densities (boilers, vats and pasteurizers), and a variety of custom designs for specific requirements.

Our equipment is designed to adopt best principles while harnessing heat energy. The products we manufacture are primarily designed to work with biomass fuel, though the design is versatile and can be converted to work with other sources such as LPG, biogas or steam.

According to recent statistics, the proportion of Kenyan households consuming biomass has risen to 83% from 73% in 1980. As of 2007, biomass energy resources in Kenya — firewood, charcoal and agricultural waste — contributed up to approximately 70% of Kenya's final energy demand, and provided for almost 90% of rural household energy needs (Energypedia, 2002).

Firewood is a renewable resource which can be depleted rapidly if not used sparingly. Biomass takes time to regenerate, and one of the ways we can buy time to allow for regeneration is by ensuring fuel is used efficiently to eliminate waste. The high-efficiency cookstoves and heaters we manufacture provide a solution that saves up to 50% of fuel requirements when used as recommended. Tests have shown our products have achieved Tier 4 and Tier 5 ratings, where efficiency exceeds 47% and 49% respectively.

Our cookstoves are in use in hundreds of institutions across East Africa — hotels, schools, universities, ranches, NGOs and processing plants. Customer feedback consistently shows the stoves conserve and retain heat, reducing firewood consumption, which in turn reduces emissions and improves the air quality of the cooking environment.

At Bremar Ltd we also believe in quality work and impeccable finishing. We have invested in machinery that has considerably improved the quality of our products — processing machines that run entirely on our 30kVA hybrid solar plant, ensuring our products leave the faintest carbon footprint in their manufacture.
